China’s homegrown 3G standard has seen its fair share of bumps on its road to deployment.
Initially slated for wide deployment during the Beijing Olympics, connectivity issues including dropped network connections and spotty coverage prevented China Mobile–the country’s largest mobile operator and the one leading the TD-SCDMA rollout–from making this a reality for the Games.

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. (”Huawei“), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, has announced that it has been selected by China Telecom to build China’s first 40G WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) transmission network between Shanghai and Wuxi.

Shanghai’s third-generation, or 3G, mobile phone network now covers 98 percent of the downtown area.
This means residents in Shanghai will have access to high-speed data services, such as mobile television, in time for Friday’s opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games.
