ZTE selects Trolltech’s smartphone platform
Norway-based Trolltech has announced that its Qtopia Phone Edition has been selected by Chinese mobile phone manufacturer ZTE for its new U980 smartphone platform.
According to Trolltech, Qtopia is its application platform and user interface for Linux-based mobile phones that offers flexibility and control for customizing the user experience.
Other players are also developing Linux-based mobile operating systems as an alternative to proprietary software platforms. In October 2007, chip designer ARM has partnered with six other companies to develop a Linux-based open-source mobile device platform, which it claims will be more powerful than BlackBerry-style smartphones. In August 2007, the LiMo Foundation also announced that handsets running on its Linux-based platform for mobile phones will be launched by 2008.
Trolltech claims that Qtopia offers cost-savings benefits and serves as an alternative to proprietary software platforms such as Windows Mobile and Symbian.
“Qtopia offers the advantage of a comprehensive development platform while being very flexible,” said Luo Zhong Sheng, general manager of TD-SCDMA product line at ZTE. “We hope to leverage both advantages when building our internal TD-SCDMA mobile phone platform, U980. It will enable us to create new and complex devices quickly and efficiently while supporting the Chinese 3G standard.”
The U980 is ZTE’s internal TD-SCDMA mobile phone platform targeting China’s national 3G. According to Trolltech, ZTE is the biggest infrastructure supplier in China’s TD-SCDMA 3G market and has created the U980 platform to facilitate 3G smartphone development. It has already launched the e3 and e700 smartphones, which use the Qtopia Phone Edition.
