Yahoo! targets the women’s market

Yahoo!, owner of the most-visited Unites States Web site, is to start a site aimed at women aged 25 to 54, targeting users more carefully to attract advertisers.

Shine will feature content from magazines owned by Hearst and Conde Nast Publications, including Glamour, Cosmopolitan and Redbook. An editorial team will also develop original stories for the site, California-based Yahoo said.

Yahoo is wooing the 40 million women who already use its sites, giving them a single place to start from when they seek information on food, fashion and parenting, Bloomberg News said.

The company is hoping to attract more advertisers tailoring pitches to women, expanding its reach to compete with larger rival Google.

Among the site’s competitors is IVillage, bought by NBC Universal for about US$600 million in 2006.

The site says it gets more than 30 million users a month.

Hearst publishes Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Redbook and Good Housekeeping magazines, while Conde Nast Publications puts out Glamour and Allure.
