United, US Airways delay China routes launch on high fuel costs

The United Airlines, a division of UAL Corp, and the US Airways have delayed the launch of new China routes, as the oil prices have increased more than 60% since they got the federal approval months ago, sources reported.

The United, which planned to launch the new service between San Francisco and Guangzhou in early June, postponed it to June 2009, while the US Airways postponed the new Philadelphia-Beijing flight which they had intended to start in 2009.

However, other major U.S. carriers such as American, Continental and Northwest said they are not going to change their plans for new China passenger routes next year.

China and the U.S have signed a bilateral agreement last year which aims to double the daily flights between the two countries over the following five years.
