Tianjin airport’s new terminal completes construction
Tianjin Binhai International Airport, one of the major air cargo centers in mainland China, has completed its new terminal building, sources reported.
As part of the airport’s expansion and renovation plan, the new terminal can handle 10 million passengers per year. It is estimated that more than 300,000 officials, athletes and visitors will travel by this airport during the Beijing Olympics next year.
The airport has also expanded runways which are 3,600 meters long and 75 meters wide and will be big enough for A380, the world’s biggest commercial airliner, to land and take off.
Earlier reports said the new airport would officially put into operation in May 2008.
The expansion project was launched in August 2005 in a bid to make Tianjin Binhai International Airport the air cargo transportation and distribution hub of northeast Asia. Last year, the airport handled 2.8 million passengers, 100,000 tons of cargo, and 55,000 flights. It is also the hub airport for the privately owned Okay Airways.
