Subsidized list includes foreign labels

Samsung, Panasonic, Nokia and other leading foreign labels are on the list of subsidized household appliances for Chinese farmers.

The Chinese government promised to grant a 13-percent subsidy for household appliances for farmers on purchase of household appliances to improve the living standards of 900 million rural residents and boost domestic consumption. A pilot program began in December last year.

According to the bidding results announced by the China National Electronics Import and Export Corp at the weekend, 155 domestic and overseas companies took part in the bidding for color television sets, refrigerators, mobile phones, washing machines and chest freezers.

Of the firms which took part, 122 of them won the bidding for the five types of appliances.

Panasonic, Midea, TCL and 33 other brands were on the washing machine list, with Samsung, Nokia, Motorola and other 14 brands getting a share of the mobile phone market in the rural regions.

Ten domestic manufacturers, including Hisense, Konka and Haier were on the color TV set list, while Meiling, Haier, Siemens and a further 37 brands were on the refrigerator list. Another 19 companies won the bid for freezers.

The government expanded the subsidy to nine more provinces and regions from the initial three of Shandong, Henan and Sichuan provinces.

The new areas included Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Hubei and Shaanxi provinces and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

China’s State Council passed a string of policies to support the development of the country’s light industry on Wednesday. One of them is to expand the practice of offering subsidies to rural households to buy electrical appliances.

Huo Dufang, chairman of the China Household Electric Appliance Association last month said the rural market provided the country’s home appliance industry with new opportunities.
