Sony issues worldwide recall of Vaio laptops
Sony Corp yesterday recalled 438,000 Vaio laptops globally due to possible overheating that could burn users.
In China, the recall covers about 78,000 models and consumers can check Sony’s Website or call its hotline (8008202228) to ask for “free test and repair” services if necessary, Sony said.
The problem in the Sony Vaio laptops, produced between May 2007 and July 2008, are related to irregularly positioned wires near the computer’s hinge that can cause a short circuit and overheating.
“The occurrence of the (short circuit) problem happens at a extreme low rate, about 0.05 percent,” said Sony in a Chinese-language statement delivered to Shanghai Daily.
This is not the first time that Sony has had to recall products in the personal computer industry, one of the Japanese giant’s core business along with music, game and TV.
Sony has been dogged in recent years by recalls of laptop computer batteries due to concerns over overheating.
Dell Inc, Apple Inc, Lenovo Group Ltd and other personal computer makers recalled 9.6 million Sony batteries in 2006.
The latest recall could hurt the Sony brand, a benchmark in the consumer-related sectors, industry insiders said.
