Nokia Siemens to deliver first Flexi Base Station in China

Nokia Siemens Networks, a leading telecoms firm jointly established by Finland-based Nokia and Germany-based Siemens this year, announced that it has won the contract from China Mobile Group Beijing Ltd to deliver its first Flexi Base Station in China.

The first sale of a Flexi GSM Base Station, which has been acclaimed to be the smallest and most energy-efficient product, will be installed in the Bird’s Nest, the official stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games.

According to Zhang Zhiqiang, head of Nokia Siemens Network Greater China Region, the new station could save up to 70% energy. In a large metropolis with about 5,000 base stations, it will help the city to save up to 73,000 tons of carbon dioxide emission.

With the new base station, it will provide cost reductions to operators, as it reduces power consumption and  site costs by occupying less space. As the technology integrated into the bases are below the typical size and weight thresholds, locations that were previously unsuitable for use, may be potential sites for the new base stations.
