LG Display to invest in electronic paper display maker

LG Display Co., the world’s second largest liquid crystal display (LCD) manufacturer, agreed to invest 30.5 million U.S. dollars in a electronic paper display (EPD) maker from China’s Taiwan, the company said in a press release Monday.

Under the agreement, LG Display will purchase 30.5 million U.S. dollars worth of bonds issued by Hydis Technologies Co., an affiliate of Taiwan’s Prime View International (PVI), and work on a patent cross-licensing deal to expedite technical cooperation between the two.

The two sides also agreed to buy display panels from each other, with LG Display providing consulting services on panel production technologies to Hydis.

The release added this agreement will further enhance the development of EPD technologies and future industries involving e-book products.

PVI is the world’s largest EPD manufacturer and in 2008 acquired Hydis who owns 2nd, 2.5th, and 3rd-generation EPD panel manufacturing lines.
