Great Wall Motor to sell 700 vehicles in Algeria

Hong Kong-listed Great Wall Motor Co<2333>, China’s largest manufacturer of sports utility vehicles (SUV) and pick-up trucks, shipped 700 vehicles to Algeria on Oct. 30, sources reported.

The move will partly help the Chinese company offset the negative effect from the slowing domestic demand, according to the sources.

The vehicles shipped to the African country include GWPeri minicars and pickups, but Great Wall Motor did not specify the buyers.

Great Wall has sold almost 2,000 GWPeri minicars in Africa this year despite the global financial turmoil and economic recession that has curbed the growth of automobile industry. Its domestic sales growth dropped around a third year-on-year to 12% in the first nine months, according to the company.

The company also revealed it was preparing to set up assembly plants overseas. However, no more details were provided.
