GM to launch Chevrolet Volt in China in 2011

General Motors Corp (GM), the largest automaker in the U.S., plans to launch the Chevrolet Volt in China in 2011, one year after its launch in the U.S., said GM China on Tuesday.

The plug-in hybrid car is a pure electricity driven car, and the engine is purely for charging the Lithim Ion battery pack consisting of 220 battery cells that can store up to 16 kWh of electricity.

In April, GM showcased the hybrid version of its Buick LaCrosse sedan at the Beijing auto show, after Toyota launched its Prius in the fast growing Chinese market.

It is important for GM to demonstrate a commitment to hybrid and other clean-energy technology in line with the Chinese government’s policy of cutting emission and saving energy, said GM executives earlier.

The move also shows the U.S. auto maker has been attaching greater importance to China as a major market in GM’s global strategies.

The company sold 590,126 vehicles in China in the first half of 2008, representing a year-on-year increase of 12.7%.
