CNPC produces 61.7 bln cm of NG in 2008
State-owned CNPC, China’s leading oil and gas firm, said it produced 61.7 billion cubic metres of natural gas in 2008, up 13.8 percent from 54.2 billion cubic metres in 2007, according to Reuters calculations.
The growth rate was sharply lower than the 22.7 percent recorded in 2007.
But the annual average growth has reached 7.4 billion cubic metres since 2003, an annual growth rate of 20 percent.
CNPC set a target to almost double the length of its natural gas pipelines to 43,000 kilometres by 2015 from the current 22,000 kilometres.
It is constructing the second west-east gas pipeline that will span some 9,000 kilometres from the northwestern Xinjiang region to the coastal province of Guangdong in the south and the financial hub of Shanghai in the east.
The line is part of a massive project that would enable China to begin importing the clean fuel from Turkmenistan in Central Asia in 2010, eventually rising to as much as 30 billion cubic metres a year.
