China National Offshore Oil Co. Ltd. (CNOOC), the country’s largest offshore oil and gas producer, announced on Tuesday that its new oil field Xijiang (XJ) 23-1 in the South China Sea has successfully started operations.
Located in Block XJ04 in the Pearl River Mouth Basin, about 19 kilometers east of XJ23-4 oil field, XJ23-1 is expected to produce a maximum of 40,000 barrels of oil per day. Currently, the daily output of XJ23-4 field, having 10 operating wells, is about 31,000 barrels a day. More wells will start production soon.
As a wholly owned oil field of CNOOC, XJ23-1, discovered in 2003, has one platform, floating production storage and offloading units (FPSO), and 15 producing wells.
Liu Jian, Executive Vice President of CNOCC said, “XJ23-1 is the third field of the company which has commenced production this year. The on-schedule start-up of XJ23-1 will help us realize this year’s production target, boosting our long-term production growth in eastern South China Sea.”
The company has four major offshore oil production areas in China, namely, Bohai Bay, western South China Sea, eastern South China Sea and East China Sea.
