CNOOC Starts Building Coastal Pipeline

China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), the country’s dominant offshore oil and gas producer, has started building a coastal pipeline to deliver imported natural gas, a company official said.

CNOOC, the parent of CNOOC Ltd, will build the pipeline in several phases, with Phase I linking Guangdong in southern China and Shanghai, the official, who asked not to be named, told XFN-Asia on the sidelines of a forum here.

‘The construction of the coastal pipeline is expected to be completed in 2015,’ the official said.

The pipeline is designed to deliver imported natural gas, he said.

Eventually, the coastal pipeline will connect with China National Petroleum Corp’s west-to-east pipeline and Sinopec’s pipeline linking the Sichuan gas field to the eastern market, the official said.

He declined to say how much the pipeline will cost.

China, the world’s second largest energy consumer, has been promoting the use of natural gas as part of the efforts to reduce greenhouse emissions and improve air quality.

Natural gas consumption is expected to account for 9 pct of total energy consumption in 2020, up from 3 pct currently, according to government plans.
