Chinese fixed-line carriers lose subscribers to mobile operators
China’s largest fixed-line telecom operator China Telecom said it recorded a decrease of 880,000 subscribers in October, marking the third monthly decline in a row.
Meanwhile, the smaller China Netcom said it lost 370,000 subscribers in October, the fourth decline running.
The loss of fixed-line subscribers was mainly due to free incoming call packages promoted by mobile operators and other reduced tariff for mobile communications services.
By the end of October, China Telecom and China Netcom have fixed- line subscribers of 222. 56 million and 114.11 million, respectively.
In the aspect of broadband subscribers, they saw net increases of 550,000 and 462,000 respectively in October, with their cumulative subscribers totaling 34.44 million and 18.825 million.
