China’s ZTE seals Ethiopia telecoms network deal
ZTE Corp, a leading Chinese telecom equipment and cell phone producer, announced Wednesday it has agreed to build a nationwide telecommunication network in Ethiopia.
It is said that the network will cover 14 major cities in the east African country, including capital Addis Ababa.
The network will offer Ethiopia Telecommunications Corp (ETC) access to next-generation network services covering mobile communication, Internet protocol and multiples.
Completion date of the network has been set for October 2009, said ZTE spokeswoman Margrete Ma., but more details have not been disclosed. Agreement for building an Internet protocol backbone network to ETC was signed by ZTE at the end of last year.
In recent years, Chinese telecom gear makers like ZTE and Huawei Technologies have been expanding rapidly in emerging regions such as India and Africa.
Up to now, ZTE has established cooperation with more than 500 operators in over 135 countries and has completed huge Internet protocol backbone networks in several countries.
