China’s October Car Sales Rise, First in Three Months

China’s passenger-car sales rose in October for the first time in three months after Beijing’s government eased traffic controls imposed during the August Olympic Games.

Sales of cars, sport-utility and multipurpose vehicles climbed 8.4 percent to 538,500 units, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said in an e-mailed statement yesterday.

Volkswagen AG and General Motors Corp., the biggest overseas carmakers in China, sold more vehicles last month as demand resumed in Beijing, where one in 10 of the nation’s cars are sold. Road restrictions aimed at clearing the air during the Olympics curbed purchases in August and September, the first time in three years.

FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co. and Shanghai Volkswagen Co., the German carmaker’s China ventures, sold a total of 73,223 cars in October, the statement said.

GM’s Shanghai venture sold 29,416 passenger cars. The Detroit-based carmaker is China’s largest overseas vehicle maker.
