China’s domestic auto sales may hit 10 mln units this year

China’s domestic automobile sales may increase 15% to 10 million vehicles this year, mainly on the back of strong demand for passenger cars, said a senior official of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Demand for passenger cars remains robust, although business vehicles sales growth has slowed down, said Dong Yang, vice chairman of the association at an industry meeting held in the coastal city of Yantai in eastern Shandong Province, adding that the declining trend in auto prices will be reversed due to increased prices of raw materials, including iron and steel.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government will soon set out more specific standards on safety, environment protection and energy efficiency of automobiles.

According to statistics, saloon cars, MPV and SUV sales volumes in May alone amounted to 377,698, 16,592 and 35,210 units, up 15.3%, 8.8% and 43.2% respectively. Total passenger cars sales volume reached 524,920 units, up 18.1% year-on-year.

More than 4.3 million vehicles were sold in the first five months of this year, representing a growth of 17% year-on-year, according to the association’s latest statistics.
