China warns of harm to trade if US passes bills

Serious harm will be done to China-US economic and trade cooperation and to the interests of the United States if some bills now before the US Congress were passed, Chinese Finance Minister Xie Xuren said.

Xie made the remarks before the Third China-US Strategic Economic Dialogue as he voiced concerns over more than 50 bills on US economic and trade ties with China presented in the US Congress.

He said it is worrying to see the rising trend of trade protectionism in the US, but he believed that cooperation will remain as the mainstay of China-US economic and trade relations.

He is confident that the “noise we hear now is unable to impede the further development of China-US economic and trade cooperation.”

Xie said the SED will help enhance strategic mutual trust between the two governments, thus ensuring progress of the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries.

The SED will focus on long-term, strategic and macroeconomic issues while at the same time paying due attention to the hot issues in current bilateral economic and trade cooperation, Xie pointed out.

China and the US have become each other’s second largest trading partner. Bilateral trade volume has surged from less than US$2.5 billion when diplomatic relations were set up in the late 1970s to US$262.68 billion in 2006.

“These achievements have not come easily and should be all the more cherished. The two sides should properly address issues in current economic and trade relations through dialogue and consultation so as to jointly safeguard the mutually beneficial and win-win economic and trade relations between China and the United States,” Xie said.

“As two large economies, it is natural for China and the United States to have some differences and frictions in the course of rapid development of economic and trade cooperation,” Xie said.

“Therefore, it is important for both sides to embrace the spirit of cooperation and common development, and properly resolve the differences through sincere dialogue and consultation on an equal footing.”

Xie said the stable and healthy growth of China-US economic and trade relations “are not just in the interest of the two countries and peoples, but also conducive to the prosperity and growth of the world economy.”

The SED III, with “Seizing Opportunities of Economic Globalization and Dealing with Challenges of Economic Globalization” as its theme, will be held in Beijing on Wednesday and Thursday.
