China Unicom mulling procurement of customized GSM handsets

China’s smaller mobile operator China Unicom (0762.HK; CHU.NYSE) is considering to procure customized GSM handsets, reported China Times.

Li Gang, vice president of China Unicom said that the company is in discussion with handset producers, but he declined to disclose more details.

The movement seems to be in line with market expectations that China Unicom will split its CDMA network to China Telecom and focus on developing GSM network.

Chang Xiaobing, board chairman of China Unicom noted earlier this month that the company will invest no less than 20 billion yuan to upgrade its GSM network in 2008.

Unicom Vsens, a subsidiary of China Unicom that mainly deals with customization, procurement and distribution of mobile phones, is not likely to be incorporated with China Telecom, in view of its rich experience in CDMA terminal procurement.
