China Unicom Launches New Positioning Service

China Unicom Ltd. launched a new positioning service - intelligent navigation service - for Chinese customers on January 16, 2008, jointly with Shanghai CTH MAX Infotech Co., Ltd.

Based on mobile phones and GPS terminals of vehicles, the service is featured with path planning service based on real-time traffic information. It integrates data application of China Unicom’s two networks, CDMA and GSM, with the global positioning system, said a China Unicom executive.

The two partners aim to promote the service around the country, among individuals, companies and governments, said the chief executive officer for the Shanghai company.

The positioning service is considered to be one of the most anticipated mobile added-value services currently, said an insider from China Unicom.

The Chinese map information market is forecasted to exceed CNY 500 million in 2008, and would further surpass CNY 1.5 billion in 2010, according to a latest report.
