China Unicom Henan to invest RMB 3 bln in GSM expansion

China Unicom, the second largest mobile telecom carrier in China, is planning to invest RMB 3 billion to further upgrade GSM network for its Henan branch this year, according to a company’s announcement.

Newspaper reports said China Unicom Henan branch has invested a total of RMB 10 billion to expand its existing GSM network, which has more than 10,000 base stations. The company expects to build more than 5,000 new base stations in the region this year and over 3,000 base stations have been completed so far.

The company plans to raise the number of base stations in Zhengzhou to more than 1,700 by the end of the year, to ensure the quality of telecommunications in the provincial capital. The company’s network coverage in Zhengzhou will be increased to 40% after completions.

China Unicom Henan accelerated the improvement of its GPRS services since 2007. By May 2008, its GPRS services, including WAP, Java and MMS, have been opened in all the 17 cities across the province. Its multimedia message service (MMS) has realized inter-communication with the CDMA network of China Unicom and the GSM network of China Mobile, said industry sources.
