China Unicom eyes bigger share with rosy CDMA sales

China Unicom Ltd announced that it will increase its procurement of CDMA cell phones to 15 million units this year on the annual meeting of CDMA industry held in Beijing.

China Unicom, the second largest wireless communication carrier in China, published its 2008 development strategy on the meeting, saying it plans to take bigger shares in cell phone market this year through its subsidiary Vsens Co which is responsible for the CDMA handset purchase.

Ma Daojie, vice general manager of Vsens said China Unicom plans to set up a programming center to restructure its CDMA customization system so as to offer its subscribers handsets with different qualities and technologies catering to the customers’ need.

Total cell phone sales of the company including both CDMA and GSM in 2007 hit 147 million, among which, sales of CDMA handset contributed 10 million, more than doubled from a year earlier.

The number of CDMA handset producers cooperating with China Unicom has increased to 20 from 14 last year, including Huawei, LG and Samsung.
