China Unicom expects to keep two mobile networks this year

China Unicom expects to continue operating two mobile networks this year, despite reports that it will be forced to sell off its CDMA operation under a government restructure plan.

Unicom executives said at the company’s 2008 annual work meeting on January 11 that they “cannot ignore any network,”sina.com reported.

The work meeting in Beijing was attended by the heads of all departments and provincial operations.  MII vice-minister Jiang Yaoping, chairman Chang Xiaobing and CEO Shang Bing all spoke, but none made any mention of carrier reform or 3G licenses.  The meeting focused on developing the GSM and CDMA businesses, mobile services, and fixed data services.

Meanwhile, Unicom’s two major shareholders, SASAC and the SK Group, met in Seoul on January 14, according to the SASAC website.

SASAC is China’s state assets management agency, while SK is the parent of SK Telecom, Unicom’s largest foreign investor, which owns 6.61% of China Unicom’s listed operation.

Officials from SASAC’s foreign affairs, performance assessment, planning and development, and research departments took part in the meeting, which discussed “enterprise adjustment, social responsibility, enterprise assessment,”SASAC said.
