China to build Nanjing-Shanghai high-speed railway
A high-speed inter-city passenger rail link between Nanjing and Shanghai will break ground in the first half of this year, said Zhang Xiaoling, deputy chief with Jiangsu Provincial Office of Railways.
The project, with total budget about RMB 42.2 billion (US$5.78 billion), has got green light from the National Development and Reform Commission, and both the Jiangsu and Shanghai government, as well as the Ministry of Railways would fund the project.
The new 300-kilometer long dual-track railway, which will be completed in four years, is estimated to accommodate trains traveling at 200 km to 250 km per hour, hence shorten the trip between the two cities from two hours at present to one and a half hours.
