China sets goal for energy saving in 2008
China targets to reduce its energy consumption by 5% for one unit of gross domestic product (GDP) this year, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.
China aims to cut the power consumption for one unit of gross domestic product by 20% by 2010, with the emissions to drop 10%.
As China failed to meet the target for 2006, the central government is under growing pressure to promote the energy efficiency, said the vice chairman of the nation’s top economic planner in Beijing.
China is consuming its natural resources at a pace even faster than its blistering economic growth. The country has been making efforts to reduce the energy consumption. Premier Wen Jiabao told the government departments last year to step up the efforts to save and reduce emissions.
