China passenger car sales down 1.44% in Sep

China’s passenger car sales amounted to 552.800 units, up 22.49% in September from a month earlier, but down 1.44% year-on-year, said the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on Monday.

Industry analysts ascribed the decrease in sales to inflation and the tumbling stock market, which drained consumer cash.

In September, sales of ordinary vehicles and multi-purpose vehicles (MPV) dropped 2.32% and 31.30% year-on-year to 416,000 units and 15,000 units respectively, while that of sport-utility vehicles (SUV) and crossover vehicles amounted to 37,000 units and 848,000 units, up 7.35% and 7.74% from a year earlier respectively.

5.103 million units were sold during the first nine months, representing a year-on-year increment of 11.36%.

Sales of ordinary vehicles, sport-utility vehicles (SUV) and crossover vehicles climbed 10.19%, 32.90% and 13.55% year-on-year to 3.789 million units, 334,500 units and 825,300 units respectively, while that of multi-purpose vehicles (MPV) dropped 6.66% to 416,000 units during the Jan.-Sep. period.
