China Mobile<941>, China’s largest provider of mobile telecommunications and related services, plans to build 100,000 base stations for third generation (3G) network in the period of 2009 to 2011, sources reported.

The plan is part of the Chinese telecom operator’s overall strategy of developing the homegrown TD-SCDMA network, and the total number of base stations will be boosted to 140,000 by 2011, covering 316 cities across the country, said Dong Xin, general manager of China Mobile’s planning department.

The company has already started the first phase construction of the TD-SCDMA network in 10 Chinese cities since January 2007, and the second phase, which started June 2008 and covers 28 cities, is scheduled to be completed by mid-2009.

Earlier this month, Li Yizhong, Minister of Industry and Information Technology, said China would issue the 3G licenses at the end of 2008 or early next year.
