Unexpected fall in profit hits Baosteel

Shares of Baoshan Iron & Steel Co plunged yesterday after the top Chinese mill posted an unexpected drop in 2007 earnings, the first annual decline since 2001.
The Shanghai-based company blamed higher prices of iron ore and coking coal for the profit fall as well as fluctuating nickel prices which hit its loss-making stainless steel business.
